Rhino Doors and Rhino Site Systems Deliver Specialised Test Chamber Door for Swedish Project
Rhino Doors has designed and manufactured a sophisticated single-leaf power-operated ‘Altitude’ door for a vehicle test chamber in Gothenburg, Sweden. The door system builds on Rhino’s experience delivering three similar systems over the past five years.
The specialised door provides a clear opening of 2m x 2m and maintains a negative pressure of -0.4 Bar within the test enclosure. This advanced system operates effectively across extreme temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C, enabling comprehensive testing of vehicles in conditions that simulate high altitude and severe weather scenarios.
Key technical features of the door include:
- An inflatable seal system that maintains test chamber pressure
- Multiple heat traces are integrated into both the door leaf and frame to prevent seal freezing
- A continuously welded stainless steel door frame connected to a cast-in stainless steel sub-frame
- Automated threshold cover plate operation
- Comprehensive safety systems featuring multiple safe edges and a light curtain
The control system demonstrates advanced integration capabilities, with some controls positioned within the test enclosure subjected to extreme environmental conditions. The main control panel interfaces seamlessly with the client’s building management system.
The door was entirely manufactured at our facility in the Northwest, using its expert engineering capabilities. This strategic manufacturing decision was made in response to the current very high production volume at our main Port Talbot facility, which is operating at high capacity with multiple large-scale industrial projects.
The Northwest facility’s team and advanced manufacturing infrastructure proved ideal for this project. They ensured focused attention on the intricate requirements while maintaining efficient delivery timelines.
After manufacturing, the door underwent extensive trial assembly by Rhino Site Systems at Rhino’s Carr Place facility to ensure optimal performance and efficient installation later in Sweden. During these trials, the engineering team conducted comprehensive operational assessments, validating the door’s performance across many functions.
The trial assembly also enabled the team to fine-tune and optimise the installation sequence, significantly reducing potential challenges during on-site implementation. This meticulous preparation has positioned the project for success, with Rhino Site Systems now ready to manage the installation in Sweden. The installation process is scheduled for completion in March 2025, with the Site Systems team applying their expertise to ensure the door system meets all operations requirements in its final location.
This project showcases the combined expertise of Rhino Doors’ manufacturing capabilities and Rhino Site Systems’ installation capability in delivering specialised engineering solutions for complex testing environments.
