Spotlight on Team Rhino: Calvin Morgan

Calvin Morgan, a site project engineer with Rhino Site Systems, is the next team member to be featured in our team spotlight.

We spoke to Calvin to learn more about his career journey with Rhino Site Systems, transitioning from a site-based role to an office-based role. With experience in several roles and excellent knowledge of various aspects of the company, Calvin is an integral member of the Rhino team, and his hard work and passion are undeniable.

Tell us a bit about your journey with Rhino Site Systems Limited.

I started my journey with Rhino Site Systems in May 2021, starting as a Mechanical Door Fitter working mostly in a team of three. I was fortunate enough to work with some of our most experienced personnel, learning valuable skills and experience to assist me further down the line as a Site Supervisor.  I started as Site Supervisor in August 2023, performing the role on multiple projects until July 2024, when I transitioned into my current role as Site Project Engineer.

How has your experience as a Site Operator informed your approach to preparing RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statement) documents now?

My experience as a site operative greatly helped prepare the RAMS, write the method of installing the doors to coincide more with our method, and include the correct techniques used.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during your transition regarding the type of work you do?

My biggest challenge during my transition is getting used to being on the computer all the time.

How has Rhino Site Systems supported your professional development?

Rhino Site Systems has supported me with my professional development by putting me on various courses. I am currently undertaking the necessary courses to gain the Site Supervisor’s Qualification. Due to CSCS cards changing their criteria at the turn of the year, it means that before we can apply for certain levels of CSCS Cards, we need to have the relevant Qualifications. I have also discussed with management the possibility of returning to college to carry out my HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

What advice would you give other site operators interested in pursuing a similar career path?

To take into account the criticism that comes from stepping from site work to office-based work, understand that where the physical demands on site can be mentally challenging, the office-based role can get extremely tough. With it, you are constantly on the go, whereas on-site, you do stop for lunch, etc.

How do you think your background gives you a unique perspective when creating risk assessments?

My experience being on site and seeing and knowing what hazards exist when carrying out our works on site helps tremendously, as they can be highlighted and assessed more clearly.

What might people not know about transitioning from site work to office-based roles?

What I feel people would not know about the transition is that where you are only used to running one project at a time on site, moving on to the next project when the current one is complete, where stepping into the office based role you take on all ongoing projects, organising upcoming projects and dealing with the reactive problems unforeseen when planning jobs, i.e. weather delays due to thunderstorms, not being able to get doors unloaded and moved to entrances, personnel not being able to work due to illness etc.

What are your career aspirations for the future at RSSL?

I plan to follow in my manager’s footsteps and possibly transition into that role when he retires.

At Rhino Site Systems, we’re delighted to have helped Calvin transition from a site-based to an office-based role and look forward to supporting him on his career journey in the future.
